"It always seems impossible until it is done" - Nelson Mandela
Friendship transcends divides.
Our world today is divided. Money, access to resources, geography, culture, religion and politics separate us. Adults see unbridgeable chasms in which it appears simpler to stay in the comfort of the communities we know. To young students, however, these divisions do not yet exist. Our program connects classrooms of students to one another from as young as grade one and up to grade eight. We aim to foster connections between children who would never otherwise meet. To them, their relationships are not about bridging cultural, political or socioeconomic divides; they are simply making friends. All they need is two strings.
Why 2 Strings?
One of the first activities that students in our program engage in is sending each other friendship bracelets. At their first meeting they tie their bracelets together into one long chain. Each student has only 2 Strings, but together the bridge they make need have no end.
Where are We
Our program started in Marin County, California where Bayside MLK and Brandeis Marin have been partnered since 2018. We are looking to continue to grow our program both locally and globally.
What We Do
We partner local schools through pen pal letters and school visits.
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of [her] skin, or his background, or [her] religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
Want to join us?
We are always excited to add to the program. If your school is interested in joining, especially if you know of a nearby school you could partner with, reach out to us below.
